Classic Norwegian Discovery

Our 13 night Classic Norwegian Discovery combines the highlights of the Coastal Round Voyage with the freedom to spend some extra time before or after the voyage to pursue additional trips and activities.

Joining the ship in Bergen, we embark on the classic journey that will take us from the lush green south to the wild and remote north, then back to Trondheim, allowing us to really experience this fascinating coast, and the rail journey onwards to Oslo is a fantastic way to see more of the mainland.

Travellers in Bergen

Our coastal voyage spends six nights travelling north and calls at a total of 34 ports from Bergen in the south to Kirkenes in the north, before returning south for a further five magical nights to reach Trondheim. This gives us plenty of time to sit back and absorb the stunning scenes that surround us, and join an outstanding range of excellent excursions along the way.

Every day offers a new highlight, and the first few days alone take us to the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund, medieval Trondheim with its Gothic Cathedral, final resting place of the founder of the city, St. Olav, and the visually awesome UNESCO World Heritage Site of Geirangerfjord (15 April – 14 September), where waterfalls cascade around us from way up high. As we travel further north we cross the Arctic Circle, visit Tromsø and have the opportunity to experience mainland Europe’s most northerly point – North Cape, before reaching Kirkenes, remote outpost of northern Europe and turning point of the voyage.

Norway scenery

Turning south we are able to visit by day those ports that are visited during the night on the northbound voyage, and the benefits of this become clear as we take a daytime sailing through the magnificent Lofoten Islands – for many people the most strikingly beautiful part of the coastal voyage.

Arriving back in Trondheim we can return to the UK or take the recommended extension to Oslo.

On the extension spend an overnight in Trondheim before taking the morning train for Oslo. This is an unforgettable journey through truly stunning scenery – enjoy narrow valleys, the beautiful Dovrefjell mountain plateau, the Gudbrandsdalen valley and views along Norway’s longest lake, Lake Mjøsa. Reaching Oslo mid–afternoon, we include a two night stay, allowing ample time to explore this lively capital city.

Day 1

Depart from Bergen, the cultural gateway to the fjords, enjoy the relaxed ambience of life onboard and an opportunity to meet fellow passengers as you take in the spectacular landscapes.

Day 2

An early arrival at the Art Nouveau town of Ålesund affords an opportunity to go ashore and explore this pretty town. Departures between 14 April and 14 September will sail into the UNESCO site of Geirangerfjord.

Day 3

Continuing north you head for the medieval city of Trondheim, whose colourful history is reflected in its handsome civic architecture. Excursions include the medieval Nidaros Cathedral or the enthralling Ringve Music Museum. Evening departure towards the land of the Midnight Sun.

Day 4

Crossing the Arctic Circle you continue to the modern town of Bodø, from where you can join our Saltstraumen Safari and witness the world’s strongest maelstrom. Day’s end sees you amidst the glorious Lofoten Islands and their stylish capital, Svolvær.

A relaxing morning at sea precedes our arrival in Tromsø, the capital of the Arctic. Modern shops and cafés provide a vibrant contrast to the stunning stained glass of the Arctic Cathedral, whilst the Polaria centre explores Arctic life.

Day 6

Following an early call at Hammerfest you arrive in Honningsvåg, the portal to the wonders of the spectacular North Cape.

Day 7

The vistas and sea life become more dramatic as you approach Kirkenes, just a few kilometres from the Russian border and the Sami communities of Northern Finland. Here you bid farewell to our northbound passengers and welcome those joining the southbound voyage. As you turn south the northbound ports visited by night are now seen by day, each season bringing its own beauty to the journey, as spring and summer flowers give way to autumn and the glaciers reflect the dazzling rays of the sun.

Day 8

Hammerfest, the world’s most northerly town is our first major stop, before continuing to Tromsø and a chance to enjoy the midnight summer concert in the Arctic Cathedral.

Day 9

Passing through the Lofoten Islands the ship negotiates a stunning network of inlets and isles. It is possible to opt for an overland excursion to Harstad, rejoining the ship in Sortland, before moving on to what is the highlight of the voyage for many, a detour into the spectacular and dramatic Trollfjord. This remarkable day is completed with an evening return to Svolvær and a farewell to the islands at Stamsund.

Day 10

Crossing the Arctic Circle and sailing past the famed peaks of the Seven Sisters you enter a world of legend and folklore, before a chance to enjoy the award-winning maritime museum at Rørvik.
