Greenland Glaciers and Icebergs
Cruise
Visit the world’s largest island on an 8-day cruise
onboard MS Disko II to the Disko Bay on the west coast of
Greenland above the Arctic Circle

The landscape is dominated by rugged mountains, waterfalls
and icebergs and you’ll also find some of the world’s
most active glaciers here and may even witness the calving
of an iceberg!

There are excellent chances to see whales, walruses, seals
and thousands of seabirds. Experience the landscape and learn
about the Inuit, the indigenous inhabitants of Greenland many
of whom still make their living from fishing and hunting.

Visits
to small fishing communities and Zodiac tours to glaciers
on the programme, but there will also be time to relax on
board.

The voyages are operated by the small and
comortable Danish registered MS Disko II.

DAY
2
|
We arrive
at Sisimiut in the early afternoon, the second largest
town in Greenland. Founded in 1756 it used to be a whaling
station and lies about 100km north of the Arctic Circle.
The old part of town with the museum, historical buildings
and the oldest wooden church in Greenland are worth a
visit. |
| You may be
able to see the first icebergs of the voyage this morning.
After breakfast we dock at Qeqertarsuaq, the only settlement
on Disko Island and set against a backdrop of magnificent
basalt mountains. A former whaling centre, the town’s
around 1000 inhabitants live off fishing and hunting.
You’ll have a guided walk and also the possibility
for a walk to the Blæsedal, the “Valley of
wind”. |
In the morning
we’ll reach the northernmost point of the voyage,
Ukkusissat, which is explored during a short walk.
In the afternoon we stop at Uummannaq, set in beautiful
surroundings and at the foot of the 1,170m high heart-shaped
mountain.
During a guided tour you’ll visit the church and
museum and you’ll also see some of the
numerous husky dogs.
Several optional excursions are on offer, e.g. to Qilakitsoq,
where Inuit mummies were found in 1475, or you can join
a walk to the summer cottage of Santa Claus. |
Saqqaq, meaning
“sunny side” is on our itinerary today. We’ll
go ashore in Zodiacs and you’ll have time for a
walk through this idyllic village and enjoy the view over
the bay with icebergs floating by.
One of the highlights of our cruise is the sight of Eqip
Sermia, a glacier of about 7 km length with an up to 100
m high ice wall where it meets the sea.
Weather permitting we’ll have a barbecue on land. |
Today we’ll
visit Ilulissat, with 4000 inhabitants the 3rd largest
town in Greenland and set in the Icefjord.
The Icefjord was added to the World Heritage List by UNESCO
in 2004 and the glacier here is the most productive glacier
in the Northern Hemisphere.
The bay is usually full of icebergs and this is also how
the town was named, Ilullisat means iceberg. You can take
part in a walk to these magnificent sculptures of ice
– another highlight you shouldn’t miss!
Also available are boat tours to the icebergs and helicopter
flights. In the evening we continue our journey south. |
You’ll
have some free time on board in the morning to relax or
listen to a lecture.
We’re now in an area where we might encounter beluga
or humpback whales and in the afternoon we reach Ittileq,
a small settlement in beautiful surroundings. The local
church was moved here from the Thule area in 1960. After
a walk around we’ll continue our cruise and as this
is your last evening on board there will be a Captain’s
farewell dinner. |
Arrival at
Kangerlussuaq and disembarkation. There are several optional
excursions on offer to spend the day before your return
flight leaves in the evening for Copenhagen.
From here continue to the UK. |
