Spitsbergen Expedition Cruise
During the week long voyage on MV
Polar Star you'll experience the fierce
environment of the Arctic Ocean and
its wildlife including birds, seals,
whales and walruses and hopefully
the king of the Arctic, the polar bear!

There will be one or two land trips each day, mostly by Zodiac and
lectures are held on board by the expedition team.
Our longer cruise on the MV Polar Star in August explores
the remote eastern parts of Spitsbergen with its historical
sites as well as overwhelming nature and wildlife.

Itinerary (Tuesday Departures)
|
|
| DAY 1 |
Fly via Oslo to Longyearbyen, arriving just after
midnight. Transfer to Spitsbergen Hotel. |
| DAY 2 |
Breakfast at the hotel, followed by an information
meeting. After lunch there's a sightseeing tour of Longyearbyen, before we
leave on the MV Polar Star mid-afternoon. Our route takes us out through the
Icefjord, and later we visit the Russian settlement of Barentsburg.
|
| DAY 3 |
There's a stop at the tiny settlement of Ny-Ålesund,
with a chance to send a postcard from the world's northernmost post office,
before we head north to Magdalenefjord and Smeerenburgfjord. |
| DAY 4 |
Today we round the northwest corner of Spitsbergen and, if
conditions permit, we'll cross the 80o parallel and sail into the Woodfjord,
where we'll catch a glimpse of Nordaustlandet in the distance. |
| DAY 5 |
We'll sail through the Hinlopen Strait, surrounded by fjords on
either side. We also hope to visit Vibebukta, near the Austfonna Glacier with
its massive ice sheet, some 200 kilometres wide. Here Spitsbergen's largest
icebergs are formed. |
| DAY 6-7 |
We are now in 'the Realm of the Polar Bear' and hope
to see some of these fantastic animals. In the early part of the season our
likely route takes us north along Nordaustlandet, via Wahlenburgfjord or
Murchisonfjord and in the direction of Sjuøyane. Later in the year, we may sail
via Sørport, Edgeøya, Storfjord and around Sørkapp (Southern Cape). |
| DAY 8 |
We'll return to the Icefjord in the afternoon and may make
landings in the Billefjord and Skansebukta. There will be a farewell dinner on
board in the evening. |
| DAY 9 |
We arrive during the night and early in the morning there's a
transfer to the airport for our flight to Oslo. In Oslo, transfer to a flight
to the UK. |
